A new comedy by Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais, adapted from Neil McCormick’s ‘I was Bono’s Doppelganger’, directed by Gordon Anderson.

1970s Dublin. Friends Neil McCormick and Paul Hewson share the same ambition: to form bands and become global superstars. Paul changed his name to ‘Bono’ and his band became U2. Neil’s band never got off the ground.

1987. Dublin gangster Danny Machin wants a fair and balanced account written of his life whilst now-writer Neil is thinking of ending his. Danny sees an opportunity and kidnaps him. Neil becomes Danny’s biographer. Danny becomes Neil’s shrink, probing the reasons for Neil’s succession of disastrous decisions.

Adapted from Neil McCormick’s wise and witty memoir I was Bono’s Doppelganger, this comedy about failed ambition recounts a tale of life-long friendship and rivalry with his mate/international superstar Bono.

 

Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais have written some of the most popular comedies on British Television including Porridge, The Likely Lads, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. They have written many feature films including The Commitments, for which they won the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy and Still Crazy, which won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture.

Neil McCormick is a music journalist, author and broadcaster has been Chief Music Critic for The Daily Telegraph since 1996.

Soho Theatre Artistic Associate Gordon Anderson is an award-winning British theatre and television director, directing for multiple theatre companies including the RSC, the Royal Court and Actors Touring Company. On television he wrote for and directed The Catherine Tate Show and has subsequently worked on The Inbetweeners, Shameless, Fresh Meat, Lovesick and Endeavour.
